Introduction to speech interpretation

Course Description

Add to your Speech and Debate experience with this preparatory course, perfect for students looking to join their school’s Speech and Debate program and even tournaments! This course is more of an add-on to an official, competitive speech club that would likely take place at school. We won’t be attending tournaments, we’ll be practicing for them. For students not yet enrolled in a club, this course serves as an introduction to speech as an activity and what to expect as a competitor.

Course Goals

To teach students the importance of speech, how it can be applied to everyday life, the lessons and skills we gain from it
To further students’ social-emotional intelligence by fostering communication, teamwork, constructive feedback, listening ability, empathy
To teach students the technicalities of speech: blocking, popping, melting
To teach students the formalities of speech: how to treat judges, how to act when accepting awards

Week 1

Icebreakers
Overview of course
Overview of speech as an activity
Tournaments: appropriate attire, etiquette, judging
Brief descriptions of speech events

Week 2

Going in depth with each interp event: DI, DUO, HI, STO, OI
Show script examples of each speech type: “Breath Sounds”, “Lost”
National winners: “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother”, “Mr. Marmalade”

Week 3

Script resources
Helping each student search for a script

Week 4

Students should now have a working list of scripts
Finalize script
Work on memorization
Memorization tips

Week 5

Students should be mostly memorized by now
Work on the emotional aspect: naturality, characterization
Improv exercises

Week 6

Starting blocking
Students should be completely memorized by now
Natural reading, characterization in progress
Improv exercises

Week 7

Continuing blocking
Still working on the emotional aspect: natural reading, characterization
Improv exercises

Instructor Bio – Ariel Huang

Ariel Huang is a junior at Basis Independent Silicon Valley, and some of her hobbies are watching films, drama, and reading. Ariel is BigBang Artwork’s blog writer, part of Stewart Talent Agency, and a social media content creator for other organizations. She has done competitive speech for six years and currently mentors members of her school’s public speaking club. Ariel is excited to work to further cultivate creativity and identity with BigBang Artwork!
