Approaching Extracurriculars

Each extracurricular is highly unique. This article isn’t a step-to-step guide on how to go about them or a detailed insight into any specific area or activity. (that’ll be the next few!) What it is is insight into the general mindset students can cultivate when pursuing extracurricular activities!

Don’t allot all your time to academics or extracurriculars

Balance is key. One tip is to be selective with what activities you pursue; it’s simply unreasonable to think that you’re going to be able to do everything you’re interested in. Limit your specialties, but not your curiosity, potential, and openness. Personal growth is holistic; it’s not confined to any single aspect of your life. There are skills and lessons learned through extracurricular activities that might be harder to pick up through academics, and vice versa!

Go deep, not just wide

Society Students should aim to dive deep into the activities they want to pursue and specialize in, not float at the surface. A student interested in theater acting should not only practice monologues and work on scripts, they could also analyze acting methods, study the history of Broadway, watch other actors, pursue personal acting projects on the side.

Apply what you do to help other people

Ultimately, what we do is to impact and connect with others. For example, instead of solely doing public speaking and competing in tournaments, you can mentor others in speech. Not only are you furthering your own passion, you are using it to bring other people up.

Seek and earn leadership positions

Once you gain skills, experience, and wisdom, it’s time to step up and take charge! Whether it’s becoming the president of a school club, heading a project at the organization you volunteer at, use what you’ve learned to teach and lead others.

Make a habit of going out of your comfort zone

Be bold with your extracurricular activities. Compete in that tournament, enter that self-submission competition, perform on a stage, conduct your own research. This is your journey; make what you do last and resonate.

Find internships and similar positions

Ask around! Your teachers, relatives, and friends are all great resources for finding opportunities for what you’re interested in. Online platforms such as Chegg Internships and Idealist are also available. Not only will you add to your existing skill set by participating in hands-on action, you’ll also establish connections!

Have specific goals for today, for next week, for what you ultimately hope to accomplish
